NAWM -THE BEGINNING
In 2006, a small group of Nigerians living in West Michigan (United States of America) came together to ensure that their assimilation to the American “way” did not come at the cost of losing their Nigerian heritage and culture. After meeting informally for about four years, The Nigerian Association of West Michigan (NAWM) was incorporated in 2010 as a non-profit in the State of Michigan for the following reasons:
- For promoting Nigerian unity, interests, and progress;
- For supporting and extending hands of fellowship to its members while sharing the rich Nigerian cultural heritage with other communities in the Unites States; and
- For providing economic, educational, and humanitarian support to the people of West Michigan.
NAWM’s MISSION STATEMENT, OBJECTIVES, and MOTTO are stated in the NAWM Constitution.
On October 3, 2009, NAWM celebrated its first Nigeria Independence Celebration (Nigeria’s 49th Independence anniversary) in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
In 2014, NAWM was granted its Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Tax Exempt Status as a 501(c)(3) organization.
